The University of Vienna (UniVie) was founded in 1365. It is the oldest university in the German-speaking world and one of the largest in Central Europe. A strong focus on research, combining fundamental with application-oriented research, renders this University highly attractive for the sharpest minds. Furthermore, the University’s goal is to create and sustain top-quality research and teaching, which are regarded as one inseparable entity (‘research-guided teaching’). It is associated with fifteen Nobel Prize winners and has been the academic home of a large number of figures of both historical and academic importance.
The Department of Social and Cultural Anthropology (DSCA) at the University of Vienna is the largest institution of its kind in Austria. It is characterized by a pluralism in research and teaching. An international evaluation from 2013 attests that the department - with its broad research profile - numbers amongst the "leading institutions in Europe" in its field. Representatives of DSCA are or have been active in international associations such as the European Association of Social Anthropologists (EASA), in national and international institutions for research funding in EU-wide educational programmes, and in leading professional journals.
